***** *****'s midnight trip to Topshop lingerie

On the face of it, the king of the high street and the troubled, ultra eccentric, king of pop would appear to have little in common.

But when Topshop tycoon Sir Philip Green met Michael Jackson over dinner, they hit it off so well the billionaire retail boss treated ***** to an impromptu midnight shopping spree.

The odd couple last night took a private tour of Sir Philip's flagship Oxford Street store, from which the flamboyant singer emerged with a Topman jacket and several shirts.

Greeted outside by hordes of fans and paparazzi, the Topshop boss would not confirm if the debt-ridden pop superstar, who is said to owe £160 million, paid for his modest haul of clothes. He did say, however, that Jackson "offered to pay".

Earlier in the evening, the pair were introduced over a dinner at the trendy Nobu restaurant in Park Lane.

Sir Philip said: "He was very nice and an absolute gentleman. He was polite and pleasant-and we got on very well. I was invited by friends, who are the organisers of the World Music Awards, to have dinner with them. Michael Jackson was there as their guest.

"We had a bit of chit-chat across the table and he was asking about the store, so I took him there - it was not prearranged.

"It was no mad shop-up - he just left with a couple of shirts and a jacket. He posed for photographs with all the staff."

Sir Philip, who last month signed up controversial model Kate Moss on a £3million contract, added that he was not concerned by any negative publicity surrounding Jackson.

Last year, the 48-year-old singer was cleared of child molestation after a trial in California. Despite his acquittal, his reputation suffered.

Sir Philip said: "I'm not the judge or jury -as far as I'm concerned he was extremely pleasant and kind. The tour was a bit of fun. I'm sure that the man could still fill an arena and attract the biggest audiences in the world."

The singer is in London for a performance tomorrow night at the World Music Awards in Earls Court. It will be his first live performance in the UK in almost a decade.

He is staying at the five-star Hempel Hotel in Bayswater, which he has taken over at the cost of £50,000 a night. A metal barrier has been set up outside to accommodate the throng of onlookers - four or five people deep - that gathers each day.

On his return to the Hempel last night, Jackson was treated to the sight of a man dressed as Superman appearing to grapple with another dressed as Jesus, who was clutching a pornographic magazine.

"Jesus" turned out to be the "comedy terrorist" Aaron Barschak, best known for gatecrashing Prince William's 21st birthday party. Barschak was arrested. It is not clear what happened to "Superman".

Access Exclusive: Michael Jackson Madness Hits London

LONDON (November 13, 2006) -- As Michael Jackson prepares for his performance at the World Music Awards in London on Wednesday, only Access Hollywood is with the King of Pop every step of the way.

Our cameras were with Michael inside Earl's Court Arena as he rehearsed for his performance and MJ confirmed to Access he will be performing "We Are The World" at the awards show.

And while all was quiet inside the arena during rehearsals, outside it was a much different story. Being with Michael since he landed in London, trust us the hardest part of his day is wading through the mob of fans to get in and out of his car.

Fans even waited for hours outside of Michael's hotel for a glimpse of the superstar and a glimpse is what they got when Michael appeared on his balcony.

The fan frenzy went into overdrive when Michael emerged from his hotel to get into an awaiting van.

But the scene would get even wilder.

Ten minutes later, photographers converge on the restaurant Nobu as Michael's van pulls up.

And as soon as MJ steps out of the fan, all rules are off as it's a photo frenzy.

Once safely inside the restaurant, Michael dined with a party of 12 and even posed for some photos with Access' Billy Bush and designer Roberto Cavalli, who will be dressing Michael for the World Music Awards.

Not only will he be performing, but Michael will also receive the Diamond Award, given only to those who have sold over 100 million albums.

But the relaxing dinner ended two hours later when Michael met up with the mob scene outside.

"I was in the middle of this madness and let me just say I couldn't imagine going through this every time I stepped outside," Billy said.

On Tuesday morning, it was a bit less chaotic as Michael and our crew arrived at the offices of the Guinness Book Of World Records, where Michael picked up an award for breaking seven world records.

"Thank you for everything. God bless you," Michael told those in attendance.

And Billy took the opportunity to remind Michael of one of his records.

"I have a trivia question. Speaking of records, what album holds the record for sales in the world?" Billy asked Michael. "Do you know? I'll give you a hint."

As Billy hit play on "Billie Jean," Michael smiled and laughed.

A brief moment of levity before the Michael madness resumed.

Midnight tour ... ***** at Top Shop, top left, heading for bras and pants, and centre, with Philip Green Pictures: BRENNAN/LONG

A POSH hotel has built an 18ft wall for Michael Jackson — to provide more privacy for him and his kids. It halves the first floor of the five-star Hempel Hotel, in Bayswater, London — where ***** is paying £6,300 a night.

*****, who performs at tonight’s World Music Awards, now has a suite and six of the 12 rooms to share with Prince Michael, nine, Paris Katherine, eight, and Prince Michael II, four.

But the wall goes when he leaves on Friday.

The singer, 47, visited Top Shop — where he was given a personal midnight tour by owner Philip Green — and Miss Selfridge.

***** played with a spider-charm chain and tested lip gloss, blusher and women’s lacy bras and pants.

He also dropped into the office of Guinness World Records to pick up his eight World Record certificates, including Most Successful Entertainer of All Time.
