The long-anticipated second single from Epic Records’ posthumous Michael Jackson album ’XSCAPE’ has been confirmed by the label’s CEO L.A. Reid. “A Place With No Name” will be serviced to radio around the world in mid-August as the official second single from the project.
The revelation came during an interview L.A. Reid and his wife Erica did with Today host Matt Lauer.
The Reids and Lauer were discussing the conception and success of ‘XSCAPE’ and its lead single “Love Never Felt So Good” thus far when Lauer asked L.A. the question fans around the world have been eager to know the answer to: “What is the follow-up single?”
“A song called ‘A Place With No Name’ that was originally recorded by the group America and that Michael redid,” answered Reid. “We’re hoping to release it on August 11.”

Early on in the ‘XSCAPE’ campaign L.A. Reid indicated that fans would be the ones who would ultimately choose what the album’s second single would be. While Epic Records did not conduct their own independent survey, I ran a poll here at damienshields.com asking fans that very question, in which ”A Place With No Name” received a resounding 29% of votes. Timbaland’s remix of the Cory Rooney-written “She Was Loving Me” (renamed as “Chicago” on the ‘XSCAPE’ album) came in second place with 23%. The remix of “A Place With No Name” that appears on the ‘XSCAPE’ album was done by Norwegian production duo Tor Erik Hermansen, Mikkel Storleer Eriksen who go by the name Stargate. Stargate are responsible for some of the last decade’s biggest hits, including songs by Beyoncé, Ne-yo and Rihanna.
Michael Jackson fans have begun speculating that there might be some kind of MTV Video Music Awards show tie-in with the debut of the music video for “A Place With No Name”. The 2014 MTV VMAs take place on August 24, two weeks after Reid’s anticipated August 11 release of the single. This would be completely consistent with the two-week gap left between the digital release of lead single “Love Never Felt So Good” on May 1 and the VEVO release of its supporting music video on May 14.
Either way Jackson’s presence will be felt at this year’s VMAs. “Love Never Felt So Good” is nominated in the Best Choreography category at the award ceremony. The music video for the song was choreographed by former-Jackson collaborators Rich and Tone Talauega and will compete in the choreography category against Beyoncé’s “Partition”, Jason Derulo and 2 Chainz’s “Talk Dirty”, Kiesza’s “Hideaway”, Sia’s “Chandelier” and Usher’s “Good Kisser” videos.
